Internships in community businesses and non-profit organizations provide opportunities for River's Way participants to learn new skills , acquire exerience in a variety of work environments and gain confidence in their ability to work. Internships generally involve high school special education students who can earn gift cards by working hard in their job placements and by pursuing goals that help them with their jobs. Studies show that students who are compensated for work during high school are more likely to be employed once they graduate. Internship programs enable special education students to apply workforce skills that they learn through walking, gardening, fitness programs and Cafe Central in real world jobs.
