Fishing at River's Way

The South Fork of the Holston River has become one of the South’s premier Rainbow and Brown trout fisheries. Most of the public access sections are located along an approximate 10-mile run of the river downstream of the labyrinth weir dams. River’s Way property is bordered on the north end by the river approximately 3 miles below the TVA dam and weirs and is blessed with hundreds of feet of private access to the Holston. The water in the river comes from underneath the dam at Tennessee Valley Authority’s South Holston Lake and this means the tailwater is at a constant cold temperature state, perfect habitat for trout!

Because of its tailwater origins, the Holston is fished on a year-around basis. However, there are two protected spawning grounds for the tailwater and one of them includes our section of the river. The river is closed to all fishing in these two sections from November 1 through January 31. There are several other open public access areas available for fishing during this time and guest can be provided with needed directions at the lodge office.

The fly fishing angler may see trout feeding on hatches of Blue Wing Olive and Sulphur mayflies most any time of the year, black caddis in the spring and early summer months, midges, crane flies and black flies in the winter, and terrestrial insects in late summer and fall. Conventional anglers fishing River’s Way water can try their luck with spinning tackle; artificial, single hook lures only. All anglers are requested to practice careful catch and release methods while fishing in our section of the river during open season.

If you are unfamiliar with the river please select "Local Fly Shops" and "Fishing Club Rules" under the Fishing Menu.
